"Ask a Mexican" questions

As I noted in an earlier blog post (USC Upstate's Ask a Mexican), journalist Gustavo Arellano came to speak about his book ¡Ask A Mexican! which confronts the stereotypes of Mexicans and other Latin Americans by different groups of people. The event was held in the USC Upstate Campus Life Center's ballroom. Arellano gave us an introduction of who he is and his personal and journalistic backgrounds. Arellano confronted the interactions between Canadians, Mexicans, and Americans. Arellano then read a few questions that many people ask him when he is interviewed or otherwise (and some were quite offensive). He mentioned that he does research for the more serious questions asked, but he does not put up with stupid, rude questions. Arellano will reply back rudely to those kinds of questions. Then some of the students and other guests in the audience asked questions such as "What happened to the term 'lazy Mexican'?" and "What does your family think of your book and comedic reporting style?", and it made for an informative evening. After the question segment ended, there were a couple of doorprizes being given away to people with winning raffle tickets. Among the prizes were a $10 movie gift card and a Wal-Mart gift card. Arellano also had available copies of his book ¡Ask A Mexican! for the attendees.
