First Timer

Welcome all to the premiere episode of "Upstate Evan." Today I just wanted to post about what a stressful but great year it has been as my first of two years at USC Upstate. I have been so busy at work, especially with my computer programming class, that I barely get to see some of my friends often or breathe. I think computer programming is a neat science and art, and it is something I would gladly pick up as a hobby...however, I'm not sure if I would want to spend an entire career doing this. To be stuck behind a computer doing that kind of stuff all the time can get boring as well as depressing. I have called these last couple of months the "dark period" of my life. By the way, if you're wondering I'm majoring in information management & systems (on the media/communications track). If any of you are wondering what that is, it's basically an interdisciplinary major that combines many of college students favorite majors (business, communications, computer science, and I believe some sociology and philosophy). Computer scientists are the people that make the computer technology we use and fix the bugs, while information managers figure out how and why we use certain technologies. We are more people-oriented. We figure out the problems people would hate to experience using certain products or programs, and I've learned about all new kinds of technology that have emerged. I'm now psyched enough to want to go buy myself an iPod/some kind of mp3 player, and I'm psyched to tell you that future technology will include gadgets such as digital ink and electronic paper. I'll explain more about those in separate posts. I have mentioned that my dark year has also been a great one. I am adjusting well to the university, learning new things about programming, different technologies, business, and how law and ethics are applied in the mass media, and I have met several different people and made a few new friends (if you are reading this, you know who you are). I also have recently gotten a side job working for the Carolinian (school newspaper) doing part-time graphical design, and may be considered later for some freelance writing. I wanted to let you guys know that I finally have put my thoughts out here, and I will be inviting all friends to visit this new blog. Love you guys and have a good one.

Evan
